Welcome to Apex Music Company. I am Boyd Gibson, and I created Apex Music Company to share my music with a larger audience. 
 
I came to music relatively late, having my first violin lesson when I was 16, which was life-changing. I immediately fell in love with music. When I heard the Curtis Institute String Quartet, I realized I wanted to make music my career. When I saw how much my high school music teacher, Mr. John Edison, enjoyed his work as a music teacher, it reinforced my decision. After high school, I went to college and studied music education for one year but got drafted into the U. S. Army at the end of that year. After two years in the army, I attended Howard University and finished my undergraduate musical studies. 
 
I became the choir director at Pine Forge Academy, a historic African American boarding school with a long choral tradition. I found my love for writing for choirs as I composed a song, which the choir sang at our wedding. I returned to graduate school at Howard University. After graduation, I served as Director of Choral activities at the University of Eastern Africa in Kenya. After six wonderful years in Kenya, I completed additional graduate studies in musicology and composition at Duke University.

After my studies at Duke, I entered a very productive and fruitful period of my life. I became the String Orchestra Program Director at the Durham School of the Arts in Durham, NC, and the Music Director at The Church of the Holy Family in Chapel Hill, NC. I stayed at both places for twenty years. During this time, I wrote extensively for both organizations. You will find many of these works on this website. May this music bring as much joy as it did for my students, choir members, congregations, and audiences.

As a composer, I have been fortunate to have my compositions performed by the Duke University String School, the Ciompi String Quartet, Durham School of the Arts String Orchestra, various middle and high school orchestras, several Durham Public School Honor's Orchestras, The Durham School of the Arts Chorale, The Shaw University Choir and The Adult Choir of The Church of the Holy Family. I was the featured composer at the Raleigh Durham Chapter of the American Guild of Organists in December 2007, and my organ works have been performed at various organ recitals and church services.

I joined the music department of The University of the Southern Caribbean in Trinidad in 2018. I teach strings, music theory, and composition courses. Many of my compositions are a direct result of my teaching.
